One Hundred Years of Solitude

Book cover design for a genre-inventing novel.

The title’s custom designed typeface echoes the hand-lettered shopfront signs found in 20th-century Colombia, the period during which the novel is set.

Yellow is used throughout the novel and symbolises the imperialist “Golden Age” of Colombia, during which the Banana Massacre occurred, a major historical event Marquez depicts. The golden fish obsessively made in solitude by Colonel Aureliano Buendía’s character also appear on the back cover.
